From Uganda With Love: Abayudaya Jews Unite for Pesach with Support from Kulanu
As Jewish communities around the world commemorated the Exodus and celebrated freedom during Pesach, a remarkable and deeply moving event unfolded in Mukono, Uganda. Over 25 representatives from Abayudaya synagogues across Uganda gathered in unity and purpose—to prepare matzot together in anticipation of Passover

This historic and spiritual moment was made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship of Kulanu, an organization devoted to supporting isolated and emerging Jewish communities around the world. Their partnership helped turn a dream of communal celebration into a vibrant, living reality.
A Communal Flame Rekindled in Mukono
Representatives came from all corners of the country—Mbale, Namutumba, Putti, Nabugoye, Nasenyi, Kampala, Wakiso, and beyond—bringing not only flour and tools but also their passion, stories, and shared commitment to Jewish life. In the heart of Mukono, the air was filled with songs, prayer, and the warm scent of matzah baking under the African sun.
Local elders led the halachically guided matzah-making process, ensuring each step—mixing, kneading, rolling, and baking—was done within the traditional 18-minute window. The matzot were prepared with joy, reverence, and the unmistakable feeling of togetherness.
Kulanu: Lighting the Way for Global Jewish Unity
The significance of this Pesach gathering cannot be overstated. For the Abayudaya community, it was more than just matzah—it was about affirming Jewish identity, passing on tradition, and celebrating freedom with dignity and pride.
Kulanu’s sponsorship played a vital role—funding the logistical needs, materials, and travel that allowed far-flung synagogue members to gather in one place. Through Kulanu’s ongoing support, the Abayudaya were able to deepen connections between synagogues, strengthen youth leadership, and celebrate Jewish tradition in a way that inspired all who participated.
Their contribution is a shining example of what it means to be part of a global Jewish family.
A Living Story of Freedom
While the Haggadah tells the ancient story of liberation from Egypt, in Mukono, a modern chapter was written—one of African resilience, Jewish continuity, and the power of unity.
The event echoed with more than just the cracking of matzot—it rang with laughter, Torah learning, and the vision of a Jewish future rooted in both tradition and innovation.
As Pesach concludes, the Abayudaya communities send out a message to the world: We are here, we are proud, and we are grateful. And to Kulanu—thank you for standing with us.
